How to Plan Delhi to Manali Trip!

Planning a Delhi to Manali trip is easy to start and easy to get wrong. The road is about 535 km, the drive takes 12 to 14 hours, and most plans fall apart after Mandi. This guide covers how to choose your dates, pick between bus, cab, and flight, budget realistically, and fill five days without rushing. If you would rather skip the planning, our Manali tour packages from Delhi handle transport, hotels, and sightseeing for you.

Delhi to Manali at a glance

Detail

What to plan for

Road distance

About 535 km (sources quote 500 to 570 km depending on pickup point and route)

Drive time

12 to 14 hours in normal conditions

Main route

Delhi, Karnal, Chandigarh, Bilaspur, Mandi, Kullu, Manali (NH44 and NH21)

Ideal trip length

4 to 5 days; add a night if you want Kasol or Naggar

Typical budget

INR 9,000 to 13,000 per person for 4 to 5 days

Best months

March to June for pleasant weather; October to February for snow

Why do distance figures differ? The number changes with your pickup point in Delhi, the bypasses you use, and any diversions that day. Treat 535 km and 12 to 14 hours as your planning figure and add a buffer.

Step 1: Choose when to go

Your dates determine what you can see and how safe the road is, so choose them first.

Season

Months

What to expect

Snow

December to February

Heavy snowfall in December and January; very cold; Rohtang Pass is closed

Spring

March to April

Cool and pleasant; good for first-time visitors

Summer

May to June

Warm days, easiest access, Rohtang usually open; busiest and priciest

Monsoon

July to August

Greenest, but landslides on the Mandi to Kullu stretch are common; build in spare days

Autumn

September to mid-October

Clear mountain views and thinner crowds; best window for Rohtang

If you want snow without Rohtang, the Atal Tunnel and Sissu stay accessible in winter, though weather can still close the road at short notice.

Step 2: Decide how to travel

There is no single best option. The right one depends on your group size, budget and tolerance for a long night on the road.

Option

Approx. time

Approx. cost

Travellers who dislike long road stretches

Flight to Bhuntar (Kullu)

About 1 hour 20 minutes in the air, plus airport time and a 1.5 to 2-hour transfer of about 50 km to Manali

Varies by date

Short trips where time matters more than money

Fares move with demand. Volvo seats on July and August weekends often sell out 5 to 7 days ahead, so book early. Cab rates quoted here are published per-kilometre fares from a cab operator, so get a current quote for your date. Most Delhi buses leave from Kashmiri Gate ISBT, with other pickups at Majnu ka Tila and RK Ashram.

Gsloh rule: two people on a budget take the bus; three or four people share a cab, because it costs x dlk more per person but xdtnsz door-to-door pickup and flexible stops.

Step 3: Know the route and the risk

The standard route runs from Delhi through Karnal to Chandigarh, then Bilaspur, Mandi, and Kullu before reaching Manali. The first half is a fast highway. After Chandigarh, the road turns hilly and winding, so expect slower going and plan food and fuel stops accordingly.

The part to respect is Mandi to Kullu. Construction of the Kiratpur-Manali four-lane has cut deep into the hillside, and local news reports show repeated landslide closures there in heavy rain. In one monsoon episode, the highway stayed shut for days and over 2,000 vehicles were stranded. Before you leave, do these three things:

  1. Check the road status for Mandi to Kullu on the day, and again in Chandigarh.
  2. If you travel between July and September, add one spare day to your plan and book hotels with free cancellation.
  3. Do not drive this stretch at night in the rain.

Step 4: Budget your trip

Published cost guides put a 4- to 5-day Manali trip from Delhi at roughly INR 8,000 to 13,000 per person on a budget. The table below is my estimate for the 5-day plan in this guide (bus both ways, three hotel nights, twin sharing), built from those published ranges.

Item

Per person (INR)

Bus, Delhi to Manali and back

1,800 to 4,000

Hotel, 3 nights (budget rooms INR 1,000 to 2,000 per night, shared by two)

1,500 to 3,000

Food, about 4 days (INR 600 to 1,000 per day)

2,400 to 4,000

Local cab to Solang, Atal Tunnel, and sightseeing (shared)

1,500 to 3,000

Activities and entry fees (rafting, paragliding, snow gear)

500 to 2,000

Estimated total

7,700 to 16,000; most travellers land at 9,000 to 13,000

Mid-range hotels run about INR 2,500 to 6,000 per night, and luxury stays are INR 8,000 and above, so upgrading your room is the quickest way to change the total. Negotiating adventure activities directly with operators at Solang can also trim costs.

Step 5: A 5-day Manali itinerary from Delhi

This plan uses an overnight bus each way and three hotel nights. If your dates allow, add a sixth day for Naggar or Kasol rather than squeezing them in.

Day

Plan

Day 1

Leave Delhi in the evening on an overnight bus or cab. Carry a jacket; bus air conditioning runs cold.

Day 2

Arrive in the morning and check in. Rest, then visit Hadimba Temple, Van Vihar, and Mall Road. Keep the day light after the long journey.

Day 3

Solang Valley, the Atal Tunnel, and Sissu on one route. Leave by 8 am. Try paragliding or zorbing at Solang if the season allows.

Day 4

Old Manali cafes, Vashisht hot springs, and Jogini Waterfall trek. Add Naggar Castle in the afternoon if you have energy left.

Day 5

Kullu river rafting in season, or a trip to Manikaran and Kasol. Take the overnight bus back and reach Delhi on the morning of day 6.

A gentler pace of four nights in Manali works better for a first visit and leaves a spare day for weather.

Rohtang Pass or Atal Tunnel: which one?

This is the question most first-timers get stuck on, and the answer depends on the month.

Rohtang Pass

Atal Tunnel

Distance from Manali

About 51 km

About 25 km to the south portal

Permit

Required; apply on the official Himachal Pradesh portal

Not required

Open

Roughly May to October; closed in winter

Year-round, though weather or advisories can close it at short notice

Best for

High-altitude views and summer snow

Easy access to Sissu and Lahaul, winter snow

Timing tip

Leave Manali by 6 to 7 am and start back by about 2 pm; the road has been reported closed on Tuesdays for upkeep

Needs about 10 minutes to cross; Sissu is about 10 km beyond the north portal

The Atal Tunnel is about 9 km long, opened on 3 October 2020, and has no toll. If Rohtang is closed or permits are sold out, the tunnel route to Sissu makes a good snow-or-scenery fallback. Check the permit fee, rules, and closing days on the official portal before you travel, because they change.

Where to stay

For a first visit, base yourself near Mall Road or Old Manali for cafes and short walks. Choose Solang Valley for snow and adventure sports, and Naggar for a quieter, heritage feel. Book early for May, June, and the December holidays, when prices jump and good rooms go quickly.

Packing and safety tips

  1. Pack layers even in summer; evenings in the hills are cool, and snow-season trips need proper thermals and waterproof shoes.
  2. If you get travel sickness, take medication before the winding stretch after Chandigarh and sit near the front.
  3. Fill your tank in Manali before day trips; fuel stations are scarce on the Rohtang road.
  4. Carry some cash for local permit counters, parking, and small shops.
  5. Carry your government ID for permits and hotel check-in.
  6. Confirm your driver has hill-road experience if you hire a cab.

Plan it yourself or book a package?

Plan it yourself if you have flexible dates, enjoy comparing options, and are comfortable handling a road closure on your own. Book a package if you are travelling with family, have fixed leave dates, want the Rohtang permit and transfers handled, or simply want one point of contact when plans change. The Manali tour packages and Himachal tour packages can be customised for families, couples and groups, and we can build a Delhi pickup into the plan.
