NEWS DESK | Iraq tried to drag Israel into the Gulf WAr in 1991, hoping to politicize and break apart the coalition against Saddam Hussein's invasion of Kuwait. Now, is it possible Iran would do the same through its proxies in Lebanon, Syria and Gaza? Our Daniel Tsemach has the story.
A senior commander from Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said Friday that Iranian forces could have targeted a US personnel plane accompanying the surveillance drone it shot down on Thursday, but chose not to.
Brigadier General Amir Ali Hajizadeh, commander of the IRGC’s aerospace force, said that Iran “could have targeted a P-8 American plane” carrying 35 personnel that had been accompanying the US drone. “But we did not do this.”
Displaying fragments of what he said was the downed US drone recovered from Iranian territorial waters, Hajizadeh claimed that both the personnel plane and the drone had infiltrated Iranian airspace and that the reconnaissance aircraft was given two warnings before it was shot down.
“Twice we… sent warnings,” he said. “Unfortunately, when they failed to reply… and the aircraft made no change to its trajectory… we were obliged to shoot it down.”
The US insists the drone was shot down in an “unprovoked attack” in international airspace over the Strait of Hormuz.
In the wake of the incident, Washington prohibited US operators from flying over some parts of Iranian-controlled airspace in the Persian Gulf, a move that was later followed by a number of global airlines.
